Aedes species

Aedes eggs

Female Aedes species such as A. aegypti and A. albopictus lay 100's of single eggs on the inner wet walls of containers holding water. Common examples of egg laying sites include bird baths, old tires, flower vases, discarded cans. Eggs are laid above the water line and can survive drying out for up to 8 months. They can also survive mild winter conditions (e.g. those found in the southern United States). They will later hatch once they come into contact with water, releasing the aquatic larva stage.
