Dipylidium caninum

Dipylidium caninum, eggs

The eggs of Dipylidium caninum are characteristically shed in packets surrounded by a thin transparent membrane. Individual eggs measure between 30 and 50 micrometers in diameter and contain a 6-hooked oncosphere.

Dipylidium caninum, proglottids

The proglottids of the double-pored dog tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum, are often shed singly and may be motile when observed in stool. Immature proglottids have been likened to small 'grains of rice', while mature proglottids are said to resemble cucumber seeds and measure approximately 12 mm long by 3 mm wide. The proglottids have bilateral ('double') uterine pores (giving this worm the name, the double-pored dog tapeworm); the pores are easily appreciated on carmine-stained whole mounts. The eggs packets can clearly be seen within the proglottids when they are sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin.
